I have been remiss! I know it and it kind of weighs on my mind but good lord, life in New York is a very busy life indeed.
I wanted to take a moment to let friends and fans of liquidjill know that I haven’t been spending every single moment of free time either working, working out or trying to stay warm, though admittedly that has accounted for much of my life of late. I have actually gotten pretty involved in a local group called Transportation Alternatives.
The people involved are mostly cyclists, and the message is simple and clear: Fewer cars and more walking, biking and public transit.
The message appeals to me on a million different levels and really always has. I’ve just never felt so passionate about or connected to this issue before living in such a car-less environment. Few if any of my friends here own cars and most of them rely every single day on the amazing but struggling MTA . I hope that by becoming more active and vocal about why it’s important to think about this incredible thing we often take for granted I can get people, maybe even people outside NYC, to start thinking.
No don’t worry, I am not ever going to turn into one of those insano activist people from DC – you know who you are. I am also not going to stand outside in the cold and chain myself to a building hoping to get arrested. The effort I’m taking about involves writing letters, sharing ideas, and getting people thinking. It’s already an issue that most New Yorkers can relate to and I have no intention of arguing it with anyone. I do think that most anyone would agree that (at least in good weather) biking>taking the train>driving to work in the city.
With the spring now looming and daylight savings time a few weeks away I’m practically swooning at the idea of biking to work.
More to come soon, promise!
