Changing the way I look at things…
Yesterday evening I went to the upper east side to check out an exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
The artist was Giorgio Morandi – a collection of what I think was most of his work. It was really interesting to me that much of his theme throughout his life was to take simple objects or landscapes and forgo any attention to detail and instead focus on the way that lines and color and light create perception. He blurred out all the things that we naturally train our eyes upon and focused instead on the things we rarely, if ever notice. The shapes that exist in nature, and how depth can be unimportant, ignored.
That perception change, that core idea is sticking with me. The concept of how people look at a thing, regardless of its complexity, and how that method of looking manipulates so much of how people think. I feel that I spent a good portion of my young life trying to unravel or bring into focus many things in the world that were unclear. Often, the harder I tried the more out of focus perception became, which perhaps is part of what Morandi what thinking as well.
In any case, it got me thinking, and art and thoughts and light and ideas are always good. I think so anyway.
I do know one thing though – I will definitely be headed back to the Met to take another look.
