It was another exciting, action packed weekend, far far to busy to allot any blog writing time. A quick summary for those who may be interested:
Thursday night turned into an evening in my own hood, and an opportunity to discover a great little bar only a few blocks from my house that has micro brews and occasional free(!!!) drink deals. Here are two American pints from that evening.
I was surprised to learn that a true English pint is actually bigger than the ones I’ve come to know and love here in the states.
Figures.
Though I didn’t exactly get to bed as early as I had planned it was a very fun night and the following day was productive enough to more than make up for it.
Friday was a full scale attack on what is now affectionately known as our “kitchen-let”. With the combined powers of me, my roommate and my new favorite bloke Matt, the evening was a roaring success.
I learned how to operate a drill, find a stud and successfully hang a weight bearing shelf. Pictures to come as the project nears completion but to say that we made leaps and bounds forward is an understatement. Three more boxes unpacked, and with only 4 more to go the end is truly in sight. The silverware solution alone is pretty amazing, if I do say so myself, though I should have grabbed a picture of Melissa holding the mounting bar up while the epoxy set. I told her it would be five minutes, and I think it came closer to 35 or so.
Homegirl is a trooper.
Saturday began with a long run (5 miles-ish?) followed by yet another trip to Ikea to return items that were just not meant to be in our kitchen. I’m expecting one to two more trips back and then I think I shall never set foot in the store again. I would so much rather support my local merchants and purchase what I need from shops in Park Slope. Funny enough, the price difference is nominal when placed against the convenience factor and the benefits of avoiding the monstrosity that is a big box store.
Another amazing piece to living here (will I ever find an end to these things in New York??!) is the opportunity to meet people from all over the world. On Saturday I had a lovely dinner with my new friend Matt and his friends. All of them are from Australia, which lends a whole new aspect of depth to conversation about New York. While I may think of myself as having come far to be here, it is no real comparison to their experience. It’s a little humbling to think about the logistics of visiting family and friends when the trip involves a 20+ hour plane flight. To think I was getting preoccupied with the 5 hour train ride to DC. Perspective is grand thing indeed.
Sunday was another opportunity for a long and wonderful ride with Wendy though yet another beautiful section of the city. I met her at a bike shop in Greenpoint, where she picked up her very cool brand new shiny and awesome fixed gear and we proceeded down McGuiness Blvd and well up into Long Island City. There were a ton of waterside parks and really cool buildings and graffiti.
Notice the fantastic view of the Manhattan skyline.
And a shot of Socrates Sculpture Park, which was amazing.
I returned home famished, to my wonderful roommate who had purchased fresh made whole wheat pasta, sauce and artichokes for dinner. A glass of red wine, some fantastic organic dark chocolate (thank you Matt!) accompanied by a great movie – and my weekend wrapped a resounding success.
This evening I’m headed to a Mets game – one of the very last at Shea Stadium. This is a little bittersweet for me as I have very fond childhood memories of games at Shea with my family. I do feel lucky to be here now though and to see it all one last time.
Here’s hoping that we win tonight!
