Welcome to New York

So my life as a New Yorker officially began on Saturday August 9th around 7pm.

After a very long day of schlepping absolutely everything that could possibly fit into my tiny acura across 4 states and all kinds of interesting traffic (a car shooting out 12 foot flames tops the list in my memory), I finally arrived.

For the time being I’m living in Kew Gardens with my new roommate and pounding the NYC pavement. Yesterday I interviewed for a pretty awesome job in creative marketing at an agency and then also put my name in the temp job hat to fill in the space until I’m gainfully employed.

A few things to note about New York job hunting:

  • do not wear your interview shoes while trudging through the streets of Manhattan, particularly if you have any issues what so ever with direction. Scratch that, even if you are the subway god/godess and know precisely where to emerge, where to sit on the train that is closest to the direction you’re headed and have a natural compass built into your brain – you should still stick the strappy little numbers in a bag, and don the comfy rubber soles. Use a little Victoria’s Secret sized bag, no one ever has to know. (thanks M for the tip)

  • bring your lunch. Even if its a ziplock bag of roasted almonds (yum!) you’ll be glad you did. Sandwiches average 7-10 bucks in the city and your gonna want something to drink. If you forgot to bring your shoes, you’ll want something harder than water, believe me.

  • smile, even though people tell you not to, I walked through the city yesterday, wearing stupid shoes and sporting very painful feet, but it didn’t stop me from looking up and grinning like the silly little tourist I am. Why should I deprive myself of the simple pleasures of loving my choices just to look a little cool and city slick? Not a chance, I love the city and I tell you, it loves me right back.

Last night I was discussing a Sex in the City episode with my roommate.

Stop it – if you don’t want me to reference SITC then you shouldn’t have made friends with a 30 something female who uproots and moves to New York at the prime of her life.

So there.

Anyway, in the episode one of the characters, and no, I don’t know their names. yet. but one of them says that while living in NYC a woman is constantly focusing on at least one of three things: a better job, a better apartment and a better man. An ambitious woman might focus on two at one time, but all three? Forget it. So, as I am actively seeking an apartment in Brooklyn as well as job hunting like a mad person we can all reasonably assume that nothing else is going on in my life.

And even if it was, you really wouldn’t read about it here, now would you?

SO… the master plan, (this is where I rub my hands together and practice my Mr. Burns laugh) is to find an apartment on Thursday or Friday of this week, move in by the weekend of the 23rd, and be gainfully employed with health insurance by, say my birthday, September 12th. I think I can meet these goals, I’m determined as can be and, quite frankly, I was absolutely certain that 32 would be a magical year for me. I have 33 days left to prove myself right.

And on that note – here’s a pic of the temporary hood, I don’t think I’ll miss it too much:

And here’s one from the 2 skinny j’s show on Sunday night. It was a blast, they pulled me up onto the stage with them. Another awesome welcome to the city!

And let me see if I can get the video in here as well… Front and center with the keytar baby! After the jump!
